Kuo Diedrich Chi wins for outstanding clubhouse design for Springdale’s new resort clubhouse

Atlanta – October 13, 2022 – Kuo Diedrich Chi won first place in Golf Inc.’s 2022 Clubhouse of the Year in the Best New Public category for Springdale in Cruso, North Carolina. This is Kuo Diedrich Chi’s sixth consecutive Golf Inc. Clubhouse of the Year recognition, and its first, first-place nod.

Golf Inc. annually recognizes the top clubhouse designs in public and private new construction and renovations.

Since its establishment in the 1970s, Springdale has provided members and visitors with luxury golf and resort experiences in an unpretentious and picturesque setting. The club sought to expand its services and amenities while maintaining the site’s natural beauty. Kuo Diedrich Chi’s solution was the creation of facilities that brought sweeping outdoor views inside and eschewed the traditional club layout of a single large building containing all amenities.

“Cold Mountain is a beautiful setting and we wanted to ensure the club’s new amenities highlighted that,” said Kuo Diedrich Chi co-founder Mark Diedrich. “Instead of keeping everything in a box, we designed separate buildings that integrated the interior and exterior to keep the setting more cohesive. This idea of bringing the ‘outside in’ is a concept that we at Kuo Diedrich Chi have long championed and are excited to share this unique application of it with Springdale’s members and resort guests.”

“You don’t feel like you’re in a big 50-foot-high banquet hall and you can communicate on a personal level and feel comfort,” said Lex West, club owner.

The new club village at Springdale includes new amenities including a fitness center, resort pool, pro shop, welcome center and The Rocky Face Tavern, a new restaurant and bar. In addition to nearly floor-to-ceiling windows featuring the surrounding mountain views, both facilities feature innovative design solutions to maximize indoor-outdoor integration.

“We call the fitness center the fitness barn to complement the English Country Village style of the club, and adorned it with reclaimed wood siding, a barn door entrance, and natural wood incorporated into the interior ceiling and wood flooring,” said Diedrich. “The rustic nature of the materials helps to capture the setting and casual atmosphere of Springdale.”

The fitness center also features rolling glass garage doors to bring fresh air into the cardio theater and aerobics studio.

The Rocky Face Tavern features wood beams and ceilings as well as natural stone on the dining terraces fireplaces and walls. An indoor-outdoor bar, vaulted ceiling, and a floating bar display preserve views of Cold Mountain and Rocky Face and allow patrons to enjoy the cool mountain air.

“It was important to us that almost every seating option in the restaurant had access to a spectacular view. There is literally not a bad seat in the house, as they say,” noted Diedrich. “Obviously, the many windows provide this, but even details like the placement of the columns were a significant consideration.” The furnishings and finishes were designed by Traci Rhoads Interiors of Atlanta, Georgia. The project was constructed by JR Vannoy Construction.
